Child Developmental Delay

When you notice that your child is crawling, creep and scoot on his bottom but hasn’t start walking while other children of his age has already walking. The first thing you have in mind was about his motor development. Most children gain the ability to walk independently between the age of 11 months to 15 months. If your child is not walking by 18 months, his progress is considered delayed and delayed walking is caused by number of reasons.

Risk Factors for Developmental Problems:

  1. Genetic

Children are placed at generic risk by being born with genetic or chromosomal abnormality. Down Syndrome is an example of genetic disorder that causes developmental delay because of an abnormal chromosome.

  1. Environmental

Environmental risk results from exposure of harmful agents either before or after birth. It includes a child’s life experiences. For example, children who are born prematurely, face severe poverty, mother’s depression, poor nutrition, or lack of care are at increased risk for developmental delays.

Developmental Delay and Paediatric Physiotherapy

The most important thing a parent can do for delayed child is provide a loving and supporting environment.

A child with developmental delay will benefit from physiotherapy. Physiotherapy treatment for developmental delay should therefore starts as early as possible so that the child’s brain can adapt easily and learn faster. Physiotherapy treatment will focus on improving gross motor skills such as mobility, muscle strength, joint flexibility and balance. A precise treatment plan will be developed incorporating family, carers and teachers so that Child Development Milestones are reached.

Besides that  physiotherapy involves in muscle stretching to lengthen muscles, increase range of motion and prevent joint stiffness and contracture. Physiotherapist also helps in facilitating head and trunk control, supporting the child in sitting to develop weight shifting, coordination and balance. Advice about supportive device such as orthotic devices, walking aids and wheelchair will be given to the parents if necessary.

Physiotherapy treatment has the ability to help your child to achieve their maximum potential and be as independent as possible with their activities of daily living. Here in Healthworks, the physiotherapist will perform a thorough assessment and design a comprehensive treatment plan for the child. Healthworks’ Corporate Talks, Pop Up Clinics And Ergonomic Workshops

At Healthworks, we organise corporate talks, mobile clinics and ergonomic workshops for corporations both big and small. We focus on posture, keeping it well maintained while at work so that employees can benefit from efficient ergonomic designs and have a healthier spine.

Ergonomic = relating to or designed for efficiency and comfort in the working environment.

It has been proven that proper posture paired with efficient ergonomic design promotes higher levels of productivity, lower levels of absenteeism and injury prevention. Healthy employees also lead to happy employees with healthy mental states and an overall good morale and culture in the work environment.

Here are some research reviews that have shown posture care at work to have been a successful implementation on the employer’s part in increasing efficiency and productivity.

Worker Compensation Decreased Up To 90% With Ergonomic Program 21. In this research review, MacLeod (2006) explains 25 ways in which proper ergonomics can save businesses money.  He explains that ergonomic programs decrease worker’s compensation cases by 60% to 90% and that businesses should expect to save 25 cents per hour per employee who participate in an ergonomic program.  Another benefit of the implementation of an ergonomic program that supports proper posture while performing work related tasks is increased productivity.  According to MacLeod, productivity increases 10-15% with the implementation of a postural ergonomic program.

MacLeod, D. (2006) 25 Ways Ergonomics can save you money, The Ergonomics Kit for General Industry, Taylor and Francis 2nd Edition.

Ergonomic Programs Payback In Less Than One Year 22. Goggins et al. (2008), demonstrate the effectiveness of ergonomic interventions by explaining the cost benefit analysis of implementation.  The reported payback period of the initial investment for an ergonomic program was less than one year.  Contributing factors to a quick payback period for ergonomic programs are increased productivity, decreased absenteeism, and less reported injuries.

Goggins, R. (2008) Cost Benefit measurement of Ergonomic Programs. Journal of Safety Research, 39: 339-344.

Posture Programs Shown To Be Highly Effective 23. Postural hygiene programs are considered effective in preventing low back pain.  Postural ergonomic programs that provide participants with motivating strategies and actions to change their health are considered highly effective.  When Posture Experts take the initiative to educate local corporations and schools of the economic advantages of a postural hygiene program, the program should be designed in a way that inspires the audience to take action.  Providing employees with postural hygiene tips that they can implement right away in their career and lifestyle will positively impact their work output and prevent back pain.  Healthy employees render positive returns.

Chiropractic Care For Mums To Be

As Mother’s Day was celebrated around the world on the 12th of May, many of us would show appreciation by taking them out for Mother’s Day lunch or dinner or for some of us, a shopping trip. Well, as a chiropractor, I have personally seen and treated soon to be mothers, knowing difficulties that they experience everyday with their soon to be born babies. For that, I must say that mothers should be given the best care for their contributions in families. Because of that, chiropractors are in a unique position to give back to those who give so much. As we know, chiropractic offers powerful, natural treatments for many of the health challenges unique to mothers and women at every stage of life. What better way to treat your mum to a better living quality of life?

Often times, ladies who have been through pregnancy or in the midst of the process frequently complain of low back pain. Studies have shown that 50% of pregnant women will suffer from some kind of low back pain at some point during their pregnancies or during the postpartum period. However, it is uncommon for women to know that it is possible to have a pain free pregnancy or life after pregnancy.

Before we jump into ways of dealing with low back pain during and after pregnancy, you need to understand the possible mechanisms of pain. One of the most frequent mechanisms suggested, is associated with the mechanical factors, due to weight gaining during pregnancy, it causes the forward shifting of the centre of gravity and adding stress to the lower back.

The second mechanism is a follow up from the earlier mechanism, whereby over-stressing the spine leading to a decreased in the height of the spinal disc and compression of the spine.

The last mechanism would be the necessary stretch of the abdominal muscles to accommodate the enlarging womb causing muscle fatigue and resulting to an extra load on the spine.

At Healthworks, we believe that mothers should have a sweet and a memorable pregnancy without having pain. Therefore here are some tips to guide you through the months.

1) Ensure good posture
At Healthworks, our clients with neck pain often times are associated with poor posture, as it increases the strain and stress through the joints and the connective tissues of the spine. That being said, it is important especially for mothers as there will be an increased in weight and stress to the spine for the next few months, don’t let poor posture be an issue of lower back pain.

2) Have moderate amount of physical activities
Having to move in moderate amounts have its own perks. Mostly it helps improve your condition throughout the day. It helps to prevent fatigue, improves mood and it helps you to sleep better, which most nowadays seemed not to enjoy them. Furthermore, it helps with regulating blood sugar which prevents gestational diabetes. Even better, Regular activity also helps keep you fit during pregnancy and may improve your ability to cope with labor. This will make it easier for you to get back in shape after your baby is born.

3) Have a spine check
Part of a Successful pregnancy is done by checking your spine, as your body is preparing to make room for the foetus, the surrounding structures of the spine are constantly adapting for the soon-to-be born baby.  These changes may cause misalignment to the spine which in turn causes pain or discomfort to the lower back. To ensure that low back pain is prevented, look up for your nearest chiropractors or the physiotherapist for a spine check.

Healthworks – The First Integrated Posture Care Centre In Malaysia

At Healthworks, we are an integrated posture and spinal care centre where we practice Chiropractic, Physiotherapy and Fitness training. We place great emphasis on mobility of your spine, your muscle movement patterns and continued care of your nervous system.

How do the different disciplines work together in the clinic?

Chiropractors are trained to diagnose neuromusculoskeletal problems and disorders. They also deal with differentiating and helping accurately diagnose different headaches, associated symptoms and disorders as well as identify vestibular and balance disorders related to your spine, muscles and nervous system. They work on reintroducing mobility to your joints and reactivating your nervous system.

Physiotherapists focus on movement and functional ability of the patient. They help patients overcome physical injuries and help them reach their body’s fullest potential. They also look into muscle movement patterns specifically and reintroduce movements the body has previously forgotten due to poor posture and spinal health.

Fitness trainers work on strengthening and maintaining the body’s new found movement and reengage previously weak deep muscles that might have been compensating or have been compensated for.
By combining these disciplines we help provide clients with holistic care that is specific to each condition. We’ve treated multiple conditions, from scoliosis in teenagers to fused lumbo-sacral spines.

Our most recent case is a 65 year old man who has an L6 vertebrae and has fusion of said vertebrae to his sacrum. He has sought many treatments and has pain almost daily along with numbness and tingling in his right leg. He has not been able to be mobile enough to exercise and finds his muscles getting weaker as years go by with his job that requires him to sit in front of a computer. With the help of chiropractic, physiotherapy and fitness training, he is now relatively pain free unless he has been sitting down for too long.

Chiropractic helped give him the confidence to working towards something more lasting instead of yearly steroid injections. We encourage him to engage his life actively and by helping relieve his pain in his lower back, he has the mobility to move into therapeutic movement pattern changes with the physiotherapy.

The physiotherapist on his case helped him increase mobility in his hips and taught him simple exercises to engage his core and to help make the adjustments last longer. Exercising with the fitness trainers have helped him decrease his fear avoidance when he comes to exercising his muscles and building up strength.

We have other cases of disc patients who are candidates for surgery but since they did not exhibit any red flags, we helped them through a care plan that involves the 3 disciplines as mentioned as above and they have since not have to undergo any surgery and they exercise regularly and weekly pain free.

If you have only tried a single means of therapy before or even if you have tried all three, we would encourage you to come in for a consultation and try engaging your muscles and spine in a way unlike before. We understand that while one discipline is important and extremely helpful, neither one is enough on their own. Our team is trained to help you experience a full life free of pain and we aim to provide you with the best care possible.
