As Mother’s Day was celebrated around the world on the 12th of May, many of us would show appreciation by taking them out for Mother’s Day lunch or dinner or for some of us, a shopping trip. Well, as a chiropractor, I have personally seen and treated soon to be mothers, knowing difficulties that they experience everyday with their soon to be born babies. For that, I must say that mothers should be given the best care for their contributions in families. Because of that, chiropractors are in a unique position to give back to those who give so much. As we know, chiropractic offers powerful, natural treatments for many of the health challenges unique to mothers and women at every stage of life. What better way to treat your mum to a better living quality of life?

Often times, ladies who have been through pregnancy or in the midst of the process frequently complain of low back pain. Studies have shown that 50% of pregnant women will suffer from some kind of low back pain at some point during their pregnancies or during the postpartum period. However, it is uncommon for women to know that it is possible to have a pain free pregnancy or life after pregnancy.

Before we jump into ways of dealing with low back pain during and after pregnancy, you need to understand the possible mechanisms of pain. One of the most frequent mechanisms suggested, is associated with the mechanical factors, due to weight gaining during pregnancy, it causes the forward shifting of the centre of gravity and adding stress to the lower back.

The second mechanism is a follow up from the earlier mechanism, whereby over-stressing the spine leading to a decreased in the height of the spinal disc and compression of the spine.

The last mechanism would be the necessary stretch of the abdominal muscles to accommodate the enlarging womb causing muscle fatigue and resulting to an extra load on the spine.

At Healthworks, we believe that mothers should have a sweet and a memorable pregnancy without having pain. Therefore here are some tips to guide you through the months.

1) Ensure good posture
At Healthworks, our clients with neck pain often times are associated with poor posture, as it increases the strain and stress through the joints and the connective tissues of the spine. That being said, it is important especially for mothers as there will be an increased in weight and stress to the spine for the next few months, don’t let poor posture be an issue of lower back pain.

2) Have moderate amount of physical activities
Having to move in moderate amounts have its own perks. Mostly it helps improve your condition throughout the day. It helps to prevent fatigue, improves mood and it helps you to sleep better, which most nowadays seemed not to enjoy them. Furthermore, it helps with regulating blood sugar which prevents gestational diabetes. Even better, Regular activity also helps keep you fit during pregnancy and may improve your ability to cope with labor. This will make it easier for you to get back in shape after your baby is born.

3) Have a spine check
Part of a Successful pregnancy is done by checking your spine, as your body is preparing to make room for the foetus, the surrounding structures of the spine are constantly adapting for the soon-to-be born baby.  These changes may cause misalignment to the spine which in turn causes pain or discomfort to the lower back. To ensure that low back pain is prevented, look up for your nearest chiropractors or the physiotherapist for a spine check.
